To make sure you are sewing with a scant 1/4" seam allowance, do a quick test. Sew three 1 1/2" wide strips together.  The measurement across the strips should be 3 1/2".

SPAM in your EMAIL? . . .

When you send guild-related email to any member, include the guild initials WHQG in the subject line.  That way recipients will not hit delete without readying your message - maybe thinking that you are trying to sell health-enhancing drugs or the latest stock tips.

We can earn $$ collecting empty inkjet printer cartridges.  Start saving those cartridges from home, family, and friends and bring them to Guild meetings (or just give to Betty Baker) who is coordinating this effort as part of the new Ways and Means Committee.

It's a simple and easy way to help your planet and WHQG; just Recycle your used Inkjet Cartridges and help us raise money!.  The types of cartridges we are looking for are: HP, Lexmark and Dell.  So please help by recycling your cartridges today!  We cannot use laser toner cartridges at this time.  If you have any questions, just ask Betty Baker. Thanks for your support!

COMMUNITY SERVICE

by Helen Mauldin

2009 has drawn to a close and big THANK YOU for a great year!

I would like to thank all those members and nonmembers that supported our guild’s community service endeavors with your donations of quilts, fabric, yarn and other supplies. We appreciate Time Treasured Quilts and Quilt n’ Sew for quilting over 40 quilts for us and also Bonnie Blue Quilts for all the yardage of fabric they donated.

Between guild members and our Community Service Bee we made 445 quilts and distributed 444 quilts to various organizations.

The Meetings

Our meetings begin at 7:00 PM with social time from 6:30 - 7:00. Each month we have a short "business" meeting before members share their latest accomplishments with "Show and Tell". We then take a break for cookies and drinks before enjoying our speaker (for a calendar of upcoming speakers click here). Past speakers have included Billie Lauder, Trish Hodges and Pat Speth. Some months we are also able to offer a separate workshop (usually the following Thursday or Saturday) with that month's speaker.  Meetings are at the Salt Grass Trail Building, Farm & Ranch Club, Abercrombie Drive off of Patterson.  Click HERE for a map.

We design our programs to be attractive and educational for all levels of quilters from beginner to experienced. Every meeting provides new tips and/or inspiration. To further this goal, one meeting during the year is devoted to exhibiting different quilt making techniques instead of hosting a speaker.

Our History

The West Houston Quilter's Guild is a non-profit organization founded in 1993 with the purpose of developing and nurturing appreciation for the art of quilting and its history. Simply put, we are a group of people who love quilts!

Picture takers needed!  If you bring your digital camera to guild, quilt shows, Bee events or other candid shots, please send your digital photos for the website to the web-mistress!

Please remember that workshop fees help enable the guild to bring top quiltmakers to lecture and teach.   If you've never attended before, give it a whirl!   You'll find it can be great fun - and give you lots of ideas for new projects or ways to finish old ones.

Be sure to check the PROGRAMS links for upcoming events  and the Calendar EVENT page  for Quilt show and other events around Texas!

For those who love appliqué, and detest carrying around a whole bunch of spools of thread, buy one of those bobbin cases that are made of clear plastic and hold about 30 bobbins. They are made of clear plastic. Then fill the bobbins with all kinds of colors. This way you can clear out some of those nearly used up spools. Place them in a logical order (i.e.) all the shades of pink / blue/green in a row. Put the lid on and wrap a strong elastic band around. When you travel you have all the colors you need.

Comfort Quilters

The 2009 WHQG Community Service Bee (Comfort Quilters) has started working on projects for this year.  If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Helen Mauldin.
