Thursday Night Bee

BACK to PAGE 1

JULY 2007 ACTIVITIES

The ladies of the Thursday Night Bee thought they heard some jingling bells and the prancing and pawing of feet so they got busy and finished over 35 Christmas Stockings for the Bear Creek Ministries.  Nita’s house turned into an assemble line for stocking production.  Stocking were “flying” from the “sewing” division to the “final touches” division.  Yes, Santa these ladies have been v-e-r-r-r-y good this year!  (Let’s not tell them Christmas is in December not JULY!  Sh-h-h-h-h)

They also had a mini Show-n-Tell admiring of some of their member’s latest creations.  Among those shown were Michelle's wonderful black/white/red quilt and Gail’s beautiful scrappy quilt using 21/2” squares.  We are definitely going to have some competition from these ladies at our next quilt show.

On Sunday, July 15th, some of the bee members took the opportunity to go see the play “Quilter’s” in the Woodlands.  They set up a small “quilt show” giving those non-quilters a chance to see how varied quilts can be.  From antique to art quilts the small show was very impressive.  Thanks to all that helped out.  And their own Betty Baker made the “Rocky Road to Kansas” block used in the play.  Way to go Betty!

The play was very enjoyable and portrayed quilters well.  From the donation quilts of the “Ladies of the First Baptist Church” to (the little seen version of) Sunbonnet Sue (Sue had to endure lighting, hanging, stabbing shooting, drowning, etc.-- obviously Sue was not a favorite block of at least one of the play’s characters!)  As with life, happy and sad times were depicted in the play’s legacy quilt.

Our Thursday night Bee has been very busy the last couple of weeks. We participated in the guild Community service sew-in at the end of April, then had a couple of our own sew-ins at Betty's house to finish up several Comfort quilts. At our May Guild meeting we turned in a whopping 25 completed quilts. Pictured are most of them hanging on Nita's fence before we turned them in.

Pictured at left is Michelle "adding the love" to the quilts as we fold them up and get them ready to transport.

A lot of this fabric is donated to our guild/Bee from our personal stashes, people cleaning out a loved ones stash, or maybe the need to downsize. In any case, we accept fabric donations, and any fabric we don't/can't use gets passed on to Carolyns' church who will use it in their missions work to help teach young women to sew.

One of the things that this Bee likes to do is go on Field Trips.  Everyone in the Bee might not be able to go, but at least once or twice a month several of the girls like to go on impromptu Shop Hops, Quilt shows, or a combination of both!
In April while the Texas Bluebonnets were blooming, several of us went to Brenham and Giddings Texas to visit three quilts shops in the area.  In this picture,  Gail and Michelle are sitting on the front porch of the shop in Brenham - which is a VERY nice shop, while waiting for those still in line at the checkout.

Oops!  Looks like Gail & Michelle are 'shopping' in Betty's bag of goodies...

Camp Allen is our favorite place to have Bee sized retreats.  We had lots of fun in March when 10 of us stayed in one of the large cabins.

Outside our backdoor was a large porch, which looked out at a beautiful lake.  The weather was prefect for dining on the porch, breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Michelle is showing Connie and Nita her progress.

Some members planned a block swap around the Nifty Nine Patch Pattern and continued to fill their time making the courthouse steps that surrounds the 9-patches.

Five of the girls were doing a block exchange.   They dressed in Beachwear to exchange BEACH HOUSE blocks.

There was a baby born on this retreat too - a baby penguin. Michelle started a penguin wall hanging and sewed up the whole family (h-m-m-m which came first, the baby or mommy and daddy penguin???) You know what they say, what goes on at retreat…stays at retreat!

And with a new born you know the WHOLE family has to come by and visit----
